MALE FERTILITY PRESERVATION
Sperm freezing in the preservation of male fertility is a technique that allows the sperm to be kept in optimum condition at low temperatures, to be preserved for as long as the patient requires and then to be used in an assisted reproduction treatment. The process only requires that the man delivers a semen sample to the Embriogyn laboratory or that a testicular biopsy is performed.
“I’ve been able to be a father because I decided to freeze sperm. It’s reassuring to know that you have frozen sperm so you can use it whenever you decide”
Techniques for sperm freezing and male fertility preservation
WHAT IS THE PROCESS?
The semen sample is delivered to the laboratory, correctly identified, and prepared for freezing with the use of specific culture media that act as cryoprotectors, protecting the spermatozoa and then stored at -196º C. using high biological safety straws.
WHEN IS IT RECOMMENDED?
- In men who must undergo chemotherapy, radiotherapy or drug treatment that may damage their sperm or ability to produce sperm.
- In men who cannot be present on the day the semen sample is needed for their partner’s fertility treatment
- In men who are having a vasectomy.
- In men undergoing a testicular biopsy.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I DECIDE TO BE A FATHER?
At the time of starting the Assisted Reproduction treatment, the possibility of obtaining fresh sperm is reassessed. If this is not possible, the semen sample is thawed. The viable spermatozoa obtained will be those used in the different assisted reproduction techniques to fertilize the eggs according to the situation of each couple.
