DIRECTOR OF THE HYSTEROSCOPY UNIT
Dr. Sergio Haimovich
Dr. Haimovich is a gynaecologist who specialises in hysteroscopy and surgery of the uterine cavity. He is one of the leading international experts in the use of laser technology to repair malformations and pathologies of the uterine cavity.
He is currently also Director of the Outpatient Gynecological Surgery Unit at Hillel YAFFE, Israel. Director of the International School of Laser in Gynecology and Co-Chair and coordinator of the Global Congress on Hysteroscopy.
WHAT IS HYSTEROSCOPY?
Hysteroscopy is a technique that allows the interior of the uterus to be visualised and treated by introducing a micro camera through the cervical orifice. It allows us to carry out an exhaustive exploration of the uterus, helping us to obtain a better diagnosis of fertility.
It is particularly indicated in cases of infertility (repeated miscarriages) or in cases where a 3D ultrasound scan or clinical examination suggests an intracavitary pathology (polyps, myomas, etc.).
HYSTEROSCOPY VARIANTS
Diagnostic hysteroscopy
This method is intended for the observation of the uterine cavity. It is performed on an outpatient basis and often does not require anaesthesia.
Surgical hysteroscopy
A small operation is carried out to correct a previously diagnosed uterine condition, such as the removal of a polyp or the resection of a vaginal wall, the removal of mimes, etc. Depending on the case, the application of sedation can be assessed to reduce the patient’s discomfort.
WHAT ADVANTAGES DOES THE UNIT PROVIDE AND WHAT PROBLEMS CAN IT SOLVE?
The incorporation of this new technology is a great advance on many levels, above all because it offers many advantages to patients who require surgical hysteroscopy to resolve their pathologies.
Patients with polyps, intrauterine septa, submucosal myomas, intrauterine adhesions, Asherman’s syndrome, etc., thanks to the application of laser hysteroscopy, can be operated on without anaesthetic on many occasions and without the need for hospital admission , and with a significant reduction in the risk of bleeding and the number of operations, as well as a significant improvement in the quality of the post-operative period. This series of advantages, at the same time, has repercussions on the reduction of costs for the patients themselves.
As it allows the interior of the uterine cavity to be examined in such a simple way, it is a technique that is currently applied whenever there is even the slightest suspicion of alteration of the uterine cavity. In this way, uterine pathologies that would otherwise go unnoticed are diagnosed very early, and in this way we can treat women with fertility problems very efficiently.
The hysteroscopy unit allows to solve complex pathologies by means of a minimally invasive technique that is applied in the same Embriogyn’s minor surgery room.
