Dr. Sergio Haimovich
Gynecologist specializing in hysteroscopy and uterine cavity surgery. International reference expert in the use of laser technology for the treatment of uterine malformations and pathologies.
He is currently the Director of the Reproductive Surgery Unit at Embriogyn (Tarragona, Spain). He is the founder and co-president of the Global Community of Hysteroscopy and HARTUS, and is a member of the Board of Directors of the AAGL (American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists).
He is also a member of the board of directors of GHISCAT (Catalan Society of Gynecology and Obstetrics) and an associate professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the Universidad de la República (Uruguay).
WHAT IS HYSTEROSCOPY?
Hysteroscopy is a technique that allows for the visualization and treatment of the inside of the uterus by inserting a micro-camera through the cervical opening. It allows for a thorough examination of the uterus, helping us achieve a better fertility diagnosis.
It is especially indicated in cases of infertility (recurrent miscarriages) or when 3D ultrasound or clinical symptoms suggest an intracavitary pathology (polyps, fibroids…).
TYPES OF HYSTEROSCOPY
Diagnostic hysteroscopy
A procedure aimed at observing the uterine cavity. It is performed on an outpatient basis and often does not require anesthesia.
Surgical hysteroscopy
A procedure in which a minor intervention is performed to correct a previously diagnosed uterine condition, such as the removal of a polyp, vaginal wall resectoscopy, fibroid decapsulation, etc. Depending on the case, sedation may be considered to reduce patient discomfort.

WHAT PROBLEMS DOES IT SOLVE?
The incorporation of this new technology is a major breakthrough on many levels, especially because it offers numerous advantages to patients requiring surgical hysteroscopy to resolve their conditions.
Patients with polyps, uterine septa, submucosal fibroids, intrauterine adhesions, Asherman’s syndrome, etc., can often undergo surgery without anesthesia or the need for hospitalization thanks to laser hysteroscopy. This results in a significant reduction in bleeding risks and the number of interventions, as well as a major improvement in postoperative recovery. These advantages also lead to lower costs for the patients themselves.
By allowing the inside of the uterine cavity to be examined so easily, this technique is now used whenever there is even a slight suspicion of a uterine cavity abnormality. This allows for the very early diagnosis of uterine pathologies that might otherwise go unnoticed, enabling us to treat women with fertility issues very efficiently.
The hysteroscopy unit allows for the resolution of complex pathologies using a minimally invasive technique performed in Embriogyn’s own minor surgery operating room.
