EFFECTS OF AGE ON NATURAL FEMALE FERTILITY
It is important to know that from 35-37 years old women start a stage that implies a decrease in the fertile potential, much more marked from 40 years old. At this age, the monthly probability of pregnancy of a healthy woman is only 5% (compared to 20% at age 30). With age, the eggs present more and more chromosomal alterations that make pregnancy difficult and increase the probability of abortion and/or genetic diseases in children.
These data are important when planning women’s maternity and being able to consider the option of preserving female fertility by vitrifying eggs (egg freezing), since the delay in the reproductive age implies reducing the possibilities of being a mother with her own eggs. Currently we are already finding that the vast majority of pregnancies in Assisted Reproduction of women over 42 years are with donor eggs, not with their own.

WHEN EGG VITRIFICATION IS RECOMMENDED?
- Patients at risk for loss of ovarian function: cancer patients undergoing treatment with chemo or radiation therapy, bone marrow transplants, autoimmune diseases requiring chemotherapy, or women at risk for repeated ovarian surgery, such as endometriosis.
- No medical indication: Women who decide to postpone their maternity for various reasons or because their economic or work circumstances demand it.
FERTILITY PRESERVATION TECHNIQUES
EGG VITRIFICATION STAGES
Egg extraction occurs after ovarian stimulation to obtain several eggs in the same menstrual cycle and is performed through a simple and quick surgical process called follicular puncture.
After this puncture, the eggs are frozen using the egg vitrification technique, which allows the mature eggs obtained to be cryopreserved in liquid nitrogen at -196º for as long as necessary. This technique allows very high survival rates of the eggs to be obtained, around 95%.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I DECIDE TO BECOME A MOTHER?
Once it is decided that the time has come to be a mother:
- The desired number of eggs is then thawed.
- These are fertilized with your partner’s or a donor’s sperm through a process of In Vitro Fertilization.
- We transfer the embryos into the mother’s uterus.
