    WHAT IS EGG DONATION?

Freely, altruistically, and anonymously, a woman between 18 and 34 years old can decide to donate some of her eggs and thus become the best, or even only, alternative for someone to have a child.

It is important to know that there are certain circumstances in which, possibly, the only way to achieve a pregnancy is to resort to receiving eggs from a young and healthy woman.

Spanish legislation authorized egg donation in 1988. It is currently perfectly regulated by Law 14/2006, of May 26, which clearly specifies that egg donation must be anonymous, voluntary, informed, and unpaid. It also establishes that it must be confidential (the identity of the donor cannot be revealed to the recipient or vice versa), and it is understood as a contract that must be formalized in writing between the donor and the authorized center. Furthermore, the law establishes that for all legal purposes, the recipient of the eggs will be the legal mother of the child conceived in case of pregnancy.

Knowing that egg donation is an altruistic act, the law only allows for compensation for the inconveniences caused by the egg donation process.

Egg Donation is a Voluntary, Completely Anonymous Act with a Spirit of Solidarity from Women who Decide to Help other Women Become Mothers.

INTERVIEW AND MEDICAL TESTS AS AN EGG DONOR

Those women who, after receiving complete and detailed information about the procedure, freely and voluntarily decide to be egg donors, will undergo an extensive and rigorous study protocol to ensure good physical and mental health, normal reproductive system, and a guarantee that they do not suffer from genetic, hereditary, or infectious diseases transmissible to offspring.

The study consists of a psychological interview, a general physical examination, a gynecological examination (cervical cytology, ultrasound, and vaginal cultures), and a complete blood test (hemogram, coagulation, blood group and Rh factor, biochemistry, serologies for HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Syphilis, karyotype, study of cystic fibrosis and fragile X genes).

    OVARIAN STIMULATION AND OOCYTE RETRIEVAL

It is very important to understand that donating eggs does not mean depleting a woman’s ovarian reserve. A girl is born with 2 million eggs, and at the beginning of puberty, they only have approximately 400,000. We know that throughout a woman’s reproductive life, she will ovulate about 400 times, and in the human species, usually only one mature egg is created with each ovulation. Therefore, the number of eggs is not a limiting factor.

Naturally, in each menstrual cycle, the ovary recruits many eggs, but usually, one of them takes the lead and will grow, mature, and ovulate. The rest will degenerate and be lost forever.

In egg donation, as in all IVF cycles, the aim is to administer a higher amount of hormone to try to make more than just one egg grow, so that a couple can be offered reasonable guarantees of success. This procedure is known as ovarian stimulation and is achieved by administering hormones for approximately 10 days.

During these days, some ultrasound (an average of three) and analytical controls are performed with the aim of ensuring controlled ovarian stimulation, with neither too high nor too low an ovarian response. When the eggs are considered mature, a final hormone (HCG) must be administered very precisely to induce ovulation.

After 36 hours, the eggs are retrieved. This is done in an outpatient operating room, with sedation and under the control of an anesthesiologist, to ensure the highest possible safety and avoid any physical discomfort. After one or two hours of observation, once the donor is fully awake, she can leave the clinic. On the day of the puncture, 24 hours of rest are recommended, and it is preferable for the donor to be accompanied.

The subsequent recovery is very good. Most donors can return to their usual rhythm of life the day after the puncture (the only day of the process that requires rest). Only in some exceptional cases is a few more days of rest advised. In most cases, menstruation will occur normally between 3 and 7 days after egg retrieval.

Approximately three weeks after menstruation, donors undergo a new medical examination to confirm that everything has returned to normal and they can resume their usual rhythm of life.

The risks derived from the stimulation process (ovarian hyperstimulation) or ovarian puncture are very exceptional and, almost always, easily controllable.
